GCSE Mathematics · key term
A two-dimensional view of a three-dimensional object seen directly from above.
Used by AQA, Edexcel and OCR
Specification G13 · Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3
Revise: Plans and ElevationsA plan shows what you would see looking directly down from above. An elevation shows what you would see looking straight towards a side: the front elevation from the front, or a side elevation from the named side. These are flat, head-on views, not perspective sketches.
Specification G13 · Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3
Revise: Plans and ElevationsPlans and elevations are accurate 2D views of a 3D shape. They are used in areas such as architecture and product design because several flat views can communicate an object's dimensions more precisely than a perspective sketch.
Specification 8.06b · Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Foundation), Paper 4 (Higher), Paper 5 (Higher), Paper 6 (Higher)
A two-dimensional view of a three-dimensional solid seen directly from above.
Revise: Plans and ElevationsPlans and elevations solve this by showing the solid from precise directions. Imagine looking straight towards the object, rather than looking from above and to one side as you might in a photograph.
When interpreting several views, use them together: the plan fixes the footprint, while the elevations supply heights and side profiles.
Check a proposed 3D shape by projecting it back into a plan, front elevation and side elevation. All the given views must match.
Keep corresponding dimensions aligned: plan and front elevation share width; plan and side elevation share depth; both elevations share height.
