The popular name for a section of the Vagrancy Act 1824 that let police arrest people they suspected of loitering with intent to commit a crime. It was used disproportionately against young Black men and was repealed in 1981.

Revise: Minority RightsYoung Black people felt disproportionately targeted by police stops and the use of powers associated with the ‘sus law’. Repeated encounters with the police could make residents feel treated as suspects rather than as citizens entitled to protection.
Separate the Scarman Report’s findings, its recommendations and the reforms that followed. The ‘sus law’ was repealed in August 1981: do not describe its repeal as a result of the later report.
