Paper 3
Revise: Indian WarsThe Sioux were several related peoples, not a single group acting under one leader. Little Crow led Dakota, also known as Santee Sioux, in Minnesota. Red Cloud, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse were leaders among the western Sioux, particularly the Lakota.
Keep the wars distinct: Little Crow’s War concerned starvation and reservation conditions; Red Cloud’s War concerned the Bozeman Trail; the Great Sioux War concerned the Black Hills and enforced return to reservations.
Use the dates in this course: Little Crow’s War, 1862; Red Cloud’s War, 1865–1868; Great Sioux War, 1876–1877.
Distinguish winning a battle from winning a war. The victory at Little Bighorn did not prevent US victory in the Great Sioux War.
