Representativeness

Workhouse records are particularly useful for investigating people receiving poor relief. That focus also limits their representativeness: the experiences of workhouse inmates cannot simply stand for those of every poor person in Whitechapel.

Its representativeness, however, is limited. Wealthy, poor, enslaved and metic women occupied different social positions. The wife who supervises spinning does not have the same experience as the enslaved woman who performs it.
