Charles Booth’s Poverty Maps

• Booth pioneered Social Cartography by employing 80 investigators who often accompanied H Division police on their beats. He discovered that 30.7% of Londoners lived in poverty.
• He used a 7-color coding system to categorise streets. "Black" areas were labeled "Lowest class. Vicious, semi-criminal" (e.g., Flower and Dean Street, a notorious Rookery), while "Yellow/Gold" denoted the wealthy upper-middle classes.
• Booth's maps are highly useful for investigating overcrowding because they offer incredible street-level detail linking the physical environment to social class. However, terms like "vicious" rely on subjective moral judgments, and slum clearances made the 1889 map outdated quickly.

Census Returns and Workhouse Records

• Census Returns from 1881 recorded a population of 30,709 crammed into just 4,069 houses, showing extreme overcrowding. The data also highlights the influx of Russian/Polish Jews and Irish immigrants into high-density slums.
• The Whitechapel Union Workhouse on South Grove had a Casual Ward for about 400 homeless inmates, where they performed hard labor like oakum picking.

• What did victims and witnesses actually say when they took the stand in a Victorian courtroom? Old Bailey Transcripts provide verbatim written records of court proceedings for serious crimes from c.1870–c.1900.
• They include testimony from H Division constables and local witnesses. Cases like Sarah Fisher (1873), tried for exposing her child while begging, directly link poverty to crime.
• These transcripts are useful legal records of exactly what was said under oath. However, they are limited by the fact that they only record crimes that reached trial, ignoring the vast majority of unsolved offenses. Additionally, witnesses were often unreliable due to drunkenness or intimidation by local gangs.
