A foreign resident living in Athens who did not possess Athenian citizenship.
Revise: Athenian Citizenship and the Leadership of PericlesWomen, children, metics—foreign residents—and enslaved people could not participate in the assembly. Athenian women were important to citizen descent, but this did not give them the political rights exercised by adult men. Democracy therefore meant rule by a restricted citizen body, not by the whole population.
