Revise: Modern Prison Reforms and Alternatives to CustodyA non-custodial sentence allows an offender to remain in the community while facing punishment, supervision or restrictions. Governments developed these alternatives partly because imprisonment was expensive and prisons were under pressure. They also reflected doubts about whether prison alone could tackle addiction, unemployment or other causes of offending.
