Revise: MonasticismMonasticism was a way of dedicating life to God within a religious community. Monks lived in monasteries; an abbey was a monastery led by an abbot. These communities already existed in Anglo-Saxon England, so the Norman Conquest of 1066 did not introduce monastic life.
