Revise: MonasticismMonks lived in monasteries; an abbey was a monastery led by an abbot. These communities already existed in Anglo-Saxon England, so the Norman Conquest of 1066 did not introduce monastic life. Instead, Norman rulers and churchmen changed its leadership, strengthened its discipline and supported the building of new religious houses.
