Revise: Characteristic featuresThere were also hundreds of abbeys and monasteries. Monks and nuns devoted their lives to religion, but their activities extended beyond prayer: they copied books by hand, cared for the sick and poor, and offered shelter to travellers. Religion therefore influenced both explanations of suffering and practical help for people in need.

Avoid absolute claims: towns made improvements, and monasteries were not immune to disease.
