The constitutional proposal presented by MPs in 1657 which initially offered Cromwell the crown. He rejected kingship but accepted a revised version which retained him as Lord Protector.

Revise: Cromwell and the Parliaments (1649–1658)The proposal presented on 23 February 1657, which became the Humble Petition and Advice, offered Cromwell kingship. Its supporters were not simply trying to give him unlimited power. A king’s position had established legal precedents which could define and limit his authority.
For the Humble Petition and Advice, distinguish Cromwell’s rejection of the crown from his acceptance of the revised constitution.
