An inscribed clay cylinder recording Cyrus’ account of his conquest of Babylon and his actions as its ruler. It presents his kingship as approved by the Babylonian god Marduk.

Revise: Conquests and Treatment of Conquered PeoplesThe Cyrus Cylinder presents a different emphasis. It claims that Cyrus entered Babylon without fighting or battle, that the population welcomed him and that Nabonidus was delivered into his hands. Herodotus emphasises military ingenuity; the Cylinder emphasises peaceful deliverance and acceptance.
Distinguish Herodotus’ account of Babylon’s capture from the Cyrus Cylinder’s claim of a peaceful entry; do not merge them into one certain narrative.
The Cyrus Cylinder does not name the Jews. Use the biblical accounts for Cyrus’ permission to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple.
