Paper 2
Revise: Key Factors and QuestionsConquest means taking control through military force. It concerns power over territory and people, rather than simply moving home. Conquest can be followed by settlement, but not every migrant is a conqueror and not every settlement begins with a war.
Paper 2, Paper 3
The acquisition of territory by military force and the establishment of control over it.
Revise: Viking Raids and ResponsesThe arrival of the Great Heathen Army in 865 marked an important shift towards conquest. It captured York in 866, giving the Vikings an important centre of power in Northumbria. In 869, King Edmund of East Anglia was defeated and killed.
Taking control of a territory and its people through military force.
Distinguish a motive from a method. Economic gain might motivate expansion, while warfare makes conquest possible.
Distinguish the Norman Conquest of 1066 from Kenilworth’s foundation in the 1120s. It was not built for the Battle of Hastings.
