Revise: InvasionViking attacks intensified again under Æthelred, known as Ethelred the Unready, in the late tenth century. He used Danegeld, paying tribute to persuade attackers to stop raiding. Payments could secure temporary relief and time to regroup, but they did not remove the threat permanently.
