Compensation order

The Criminal Justice Act 1972 provided a concrete attempt to make restitution through compensation orders. Section 1 allowed a court convicting an offender to order payment for personal injury, loss or damage resulting from an offence, in addition to another sentence. The court had to consider the offender's means when deciding whether to order compensation and how much to require.
