Revise: Attitudes to Crime and PunishmentThe same Act introduced community service orders. Under its original provisions, an offender aged 17 or over, convicted of an offence punishable by imprisonment, could—with their consent—be ordered to undertake 40–240 hours of unpaid work instead of another sentence. The court also had to be satisfied that the offender was suitable and that arrangements existed for the work.
