Revise: Case Studies: Gunpowder Plot and Witch-huntsWitchcraft was treated as a capital offence, and those convicted in England were generally hanged. This was different from the punishment for the Gunpowder Plotters. Both cases reveal the importance of religion and authority in criminal justice, but they also reveal a crucial distinction: the plotters organised a real conspiracy, whereas witchcraft prosecutions relied on beliefs, accusations and unreliable supposed evidence.
