Revise: The Sharpeville Massacre and Its ImpactChief Albert Luthuli, president of the African National Congress (ANC), called for pass-burning and a national day of mourning. A stay-away from work on 28 March 1960 gained widespread support. Marches and further anti-pass demonstrations spread; on 30 March, tens of thousands marched to police headquarters in Cape Town.
