A loss of tree canopy through clearing or tree death, which may be temporary or permanent and caused by people or natural events.

Revise: Threats to Deciduous Woodlands: Climate Change and DeforestationA useful description is: ‘Tree-cover loss is concentrated in the eastern half beside the settlement, with an isolated patch in the south-west. Later loss remains concentrated in the east and extends into squares farther inside the woodland.’ This identifies the overall pattern, an exception and change over time.

A reduction or removal of tree canopy in an area; it can result from harvesting or fire and does not necessarily mean permanent conversion to a different land use.
Revise: Taiga protection“Loss” means that some tree-cover loss occurs within the square, not that the entire square has been cleared.
For GIS, describe the spatial pattern before suggesting causes. Tree-cover loss is not necessarily permanent deforestation, and a dominant-driver category may hide interacting causes.
