The rate at which plants produce new biomass. Net primary productivity is the rate of biomass production remaining after plants use energy in respiration.

Revise: Taiga characteristicsProductivity describes how quickly plants produce new biomass. Taiga productivity is lower than tropical rainforest productivity because several limits act together. Long winters and short winter daylight restrict photosynthesis, the growing season is brief, and slow nutrient cycling limits the nutrients available for growth.
