Specification 1.7, 1.9 · Paper 1
Revise: Influence of Weather and Climate on RiversProlonged hot, dry conditions can harden the soil surface and reduce infiltration. Where this happens, more rain flows over the surface and reaches the channel quickly, increasing discharge and potentially causing renewed erosion or flooding.
Paper 2, Paper 3
Revise: Factors Affecting River Landscapes and HydrologyGeology and soil type: permeable ground encourages infiltration and slower movement through the soil and rock. This tends to lengthen lag time and reduce peak discharge. Poorly permeable ground, including clay-rich soil, restricts infiltration.
Link each management strategy to the process it changes, such as contour bunds slowing runoff and increasing infiltration.
Explain flood risk through a causal chain: impermeable surfaces → less infiltration and faster surface runoff → shorter lag time and higher peak discharge.
Explain a chain of cause and effect: impermeable geology → less infiltration and more surface runoff → water reaches the channel quickly → shorter lag time and higher peak discharge.
