Revise: Bivariate Data and Evaluating Statistical PresentationAt a width of 16 m, it suggests a depth of about 1.7 m. This is extrapolation, because 16 m lies beyond the observed width range. It assumes that the same relationship continues where no measurements are available.

Treat interpolated and extrapolated values as estimates. Extrapolation is usually less secure.

Estimating an unknown value beyond the range of known data by extending its trend.
Extending the same trend to a depth of 0.60 m would give an estimated velocity of 0.70 m/s. This is extrapolation, because it goes beyond the plotted depth range of 0.10–0.50 m. It is less secure: the relationship may change outside the available data.
