Used by Edexcel and OCR
Specification 4.4, 4.7 · Paper 2
A person's ethnic identity, associated with shared cultural background, heritage or ancestry; it is not the same as nationality or migration status.
Specification 5.2a · Paper 2, Paper 3
A person's identification with a group sharing cultural heritage, which may include ancestry, language and traditions.
Revise: Ways of Life and Cultural CharacterEthnicity concerns cultural identity and heritage, rather than simply where someone was born. The 2021 Census recorded London as the most ethnically diverse region in England and Wales. Around 46.2% of residents identified with Asian, black, mixed or other ethnic groups, while a further 17.0% identified with white ethnic minorities.
Do not assume that ethnicity identifies someone's migration history: many members of minority ethnic communities were born in the UK.
Distinguish ethnicity from nationality or birthplace: these are not interchangeable measures.
