Conservation

Conservation can involve protected areas where activities such as logging, hunting and access are restricted. The Central Amazon Conservation Complex, a World Heritage Site, is an example. Protection helps maintain habitats and biodiversity, but rules need monitoring and enforcement to be effective.

Conservation protects habitats and wildlife rather than allowing every area to be developed. Grants and subsidies can help farmers manage land for conservation, providing a financial reason to protect valued habitats. Maintaining vegetation also helps retain the cover that protects soil from erosion.
