Definition

An arrangement of gears in which each shaft carries one gear; intermediate gears pass movement between the input and output.

A simple gear train has one gear on each shaft. A pair of ordinary external spur gears transmits rotary movement between parallel shafts. Their teeth lie parallel to the shafts, and the two gears rotate in opposite directions: a clockwise driver turns its neighbour anticlockwise.
