Photo etching

Definition

A manufacturing process that uses a light-sensitive coating, patterned light exposure and chemical etching to create a pattern in metal, such as copper tracks on a PCB.

First, the required copper pattern is made by photo etching. Then the board is populated: holes are drilled, components are fitted and their leads are soldered to the pads. A correctly etched board is not yet a complete electronic system.
