Specification 4.7.3.6, 5.10.2.2 · Paper 2, Paper 4
Processing waste materials so that they can be used again rather than discarded.
Revise: Maintaining Ecosystems and BiodiversityRecycling resources rather than dumping them in landfill helps biodiversity in two linked ways.
Processing a used material so that it can be made into a new product.
Specification Obtaining and using metals · Paper 3, Paper 4
Revise: Recycling metals and life-cycle assessmentsScrap metal can be collected, sorted, melted and recast into new shapes. This is recycling. It differs from reuse: using the same metal container again is reuse, whereas melting it to make another product is recycling.
For recycling, explain both reduced demand for landfill space and reduced extraction of new raw materials.
Distinguish reuse from recycling: washing and refilling a bottle is reuse; crushing and melting it is recycling.
Link each recycling advantage to a consequence: less mining preserves habitats, while lower energy demand can reduce costs and fossil-fuel emissions.
