Paper 2
Revise: Nervous Coordination and Reflex ArcsChemicals called neurotransmitters are released.
Paper 1, Paper 2
A chemical messenger released by a neurone that diffuses across a synaptic gap and binds to receptors on the next cell.
Revise: The Nervous SystemWhen an electrical impulse reaches the end of the first neurone, it triggers the release of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. These diffuse across the synaptic gap and bind to complementary receptor molecules on the membrane of the next neurone. This triggers a new electrical impulse in that neurone.
Describe information travelling along neurones as electrical impulses. Across a synapse, the signal is carried by chemicals called neurotransmitters.
Describe synaptic transmission in order: impulse arrives → neurotransmitter released → diffusion across the gap → binding to receptors → new electrical impulse.
Distinguish sensory receptors, which detect stimuli, from receptor molecules on the next neurone, which bind neurotransmitters.
