GCSE Combined Science · key term
A nerve cell specialised to carry electrical impulses.
Used by AQA and Edexcel
Specification 4.1.1.3 · Paper 1, Paper 2
Revise: Cell specialisationA nerve cell, or neurone, carries electrical impulses. These signals allow different parts of the body to communicate, including communication between the brain and spinal cord and the rest of the body.
A specialised nerve cell that carries electrical impulses.
Paper 1, Paper 2
A specialised nerve cell that transmits electrical impulses.
Revise: The Nervous SystemThese impulses travel along specialised nerve cells called neurones. Information passes to the central nervous system (CNS), which consists of the brain and spinal cord. The CNS coordinates a response by sending impulses to an effector.
Describe information travelling along neurones as electrical impulses. Across a synapse, the signal is carried by chemicals called neurotransmitters.
For a reflex pathway, give the neurones in order: sensory → relay → motor. Include the receptor and effector when describing the whole response.
Distinguish sensory receptors, which detect stimuli, from receptor molecules on the next neurone, which bind neurotransmitters.
