Revise: The Nervous SystemThe long fibres of many sensory and motor neurones are surrounded by a myelin sheath. This fatty layer acts as an electrical insulator and speeds up impulse transmission. A motor neurone can therefore carry instructions rapidly from the CNS to a distant muscle.
Link each adaptation to its function: a long axon carries impulses over long distances; the myelin sheath insulates the fibre and speeds up transmission.
