Specification Fuels · Paper 3, Paper 4
Combustion with insufficient oxygen; a hydrocarbon can produce carbon monoxide and carbon as well as water.
Revise: Fuel combustion, pollution and hydrogen alternativesWhen there is not enough oxygen for complete combustion, incomplete combustion occurs. This can happen in engines and in fuel-burning appliances such as boilers and stoves.
For carbon monoxide and soot, state that the oxygen supply is insufficient: incomplete combustion occurs.
Incomplete combustion can produce a mixture of products, including some carbon dioxide. It does not mean that no fuel burns.
Explain incomplete combustion using an insufficient oxygen supply, not simply a low temperature.
