Soot

Soot consists of tiny black carbon particles. These may be visible as black smoke or a black deposit on a surface above a flame. Some fuel may also escape without burning, releasing unburned hydrocarbons.

The carbon in the fuel is not all converted into carbon dioxide. Instead, some can form carbon monoxide, CO, or solid carbon particles called soot. Water still forms from the hydrogen.
