Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
The ability of a material to resist chemical attack by its surroundings.
Revise: AlloysA cutting edge needs hardness, an aircraft body needs high strength with low density, and cutlery needs hardness together with corrosion resistance. Chemists can then adjust an alloy's composition to produce an appropriate balance, while also considering disadvantages such as brittleness, density, difficulty of shaping and cost.
For a question about suitability, connect composition to a relevant property and then to the use: for example, chromium and nickel in stainless steel → corrosion resistance → suitable for cutlery.
