Specification 4.2.3.2 · Paper 1
Specification 1.42, 5.7C, 9.39C · Paper 1, Paper 2
A measure of how readily electric charge can flow through a substance.
Revise: Metals vs Non-metals PropertiesAppearance, state, melting point, boiling point, density and electrical conductivity are all physical properties.
The ability of a substance to allow electric charge to flow through it.
The ability of a material to allow an electric current to pass through it.
The ability of a material to let electric current pass through it.
The ability of a material to allow electric current to pass through it.
Specification C6.1s · Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 4 (Higher)
The ability of a material to let electric current pass through it.
Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
The ability of a substance to allow electric charge to flow through it.
Revise: Bulk properties of ionic materialsA property such as melting point or electrical conductivity describes a visible sample containing an enormous number of particles. It is therefore called a bulk property. To explain a bulk property, connect what happens on the large scale to the particles, forces and movement within the material.
A measure of how readily a material allows electric current to flow through it.
Do not confuse electrical conductivity with thermal conductivity. If the question asks about electricity, refer to the movement of electric charge.
Check whether a larger or smaller value is desirable. High electrical conductivity suits a cable core, whereas low electrical conductivity suits its insulation.
When selecting a material, link each property to a stated requirement: for example, electrical conductivity matters for the wire core, while insulation matters for its coating.
