Mass per unit volume. A denser material contains more mass in the same volume.
Revise: Comparison with Alkali MetalsTransition metals also generally have higher densities. Density compares mass with volume, so an equal-sized piece of a transition metal will usually have more mass than a piece of a Group 1 metal. Lithium, sodium and potassium have particularly low densities; each is less dense than water and therefore floats on it.
