Definition

The rate at which the chemical reactions of metabolism take place in the body's cells.

Together, these reactions make up metabolism, and the speed at which they occur is the metabolic rate. Thyroxine is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland in the neck. It helps control metabolic rate, including how quickly cells use nutrients and release energy.
