GCSE Biology · key term
The highly folded outer layer of the cerebrum, involved in conscious thought, memory, language and intelligence.
Used by AQA and OCR
Specification 4.5.2.2 · Paper 2
Revise: The BrainOn a side-view diagram, look first for the cerebral cortex, the large, highly folded outer layer of the cerebrum. It is involved in conscious functions such as thought, intelligence, memory and language. The cerebellum is smaller and sits towards the back, below the cerebrum.
Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
The highly folded outer layer of the brain, divided into two hemispheres and involved in intelligence, memory, language and consciousness.
Revise: Brain Structure and FunctionThe three regions required here are the cerebral cortex, the cerebellum and the brain stem.
On a brain diagram, distinguish the large, folded cerebral cortex from the smaller cerebellum at the back and the medulla at the base.
Match each named brain region to its precise role: cerebral cortex—intelligence, memory, language and consciousness; cerebellum—conscious movement, balance and co-ordination; brain stem—heart rate and breathing rate.
If asked how structure relates to function, include structural information as well as naming the region: for example, the cerebral cortex is a highly folded outer layer divided into two hemispheres.
