Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
Revise: Brain Structure and FunctionThe three regions required here are the cerebral cortex, the cerebellum and the brain stem.
Match each named brain region to its precise role: cerebral cortex—intelligence, memory, language and consciousness; cerebellum—conscious movement, balance and co-ordination; brain stem—heart rate and breathing rate.
Do not describe heart rate and breathing rate as consciously controlled by the brain stem; their regulation is normally unconscious.
The specification uses “brain stem”; the medulla, or medulla oblongata, may also be used when referring to the region controlling heart rate and breathing rate.
