Newton's Second Law
What you need to know
Apply Newton's Second Law in calculations relating forces, masses, and accelerations.
Understand that the acceleration of an object is proportional to the resultant force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass.
Recognize and use the symbol for proportionality (∝) and the symbol for an approximate value (∼).
Define inertia as the tendency of objects to continue in their state of rest or uniform motion (Higher Tier only).
Explain that inertial mass is a measure of how difficult it is to change the velocity of an object, defined as the ratio of force over acceleration (Higher Tier only).
Investigate the effect of varying the force on the acceleration of an object of constant mass, and the effect of varying the mass of an object on the acceleration produced by a constant force.
