A value or category used to describe the centre or a typical member of a data set.

Revise: Justifying average selectionAn average summarises a data set using a central or typical value. The mode, median and mean describe ‘typical’ in different ways, so choosing an average depends on both the kind of data and what you want to know.
Name the average and link your reason to the data and the purpose: for example, ‘Use the median because the very high salary pulls the mean upwards.’
Numerical frequencies do not make categories numerical data. For ice-cream flavours, the average describes the flavour, not the number sold.
