A systematic investigation that collects and analyses evidence to answer questions.

Sociological research is a systematic investigation using evidence, rather than relying on assumptions about how families live. Researchers might investigate how couples share housework, how parents experience childcare or how family relationships change over time.

Systematic investigation aimed at developing knowledge and understanding.

Use the research context in your answer: explain what a method would reveal about families, rather than giving only a general advantage.

When evaluating research, connect the limitation to the conclusion: a study of 12 boys cannot establish how all pupils experience school.

For methods questions, connect the strength or limitation to crime research: fear of admitting an offence, for example, can reduce the validity of a self-report study.

Investigation involving the collection and analysis of information using methods such as questionnaires, interviews or observation.
