Racism

Prejudice or discrimination directed at people because of their perceived race or ethnic background.

Prejudice or beliefs about ethnic superiority or inferiority that can lead to people being treated unfairly because of ethnicity.

Institutional racism concerns discriminatory organisational practices: a school can disadvantage an ethnic group even when individual staff do not consciously intend to discriminate. Analysing curriculum content therefore involves looking at patterns of inclusion and omission as well as individual attitudes.

Beliefs or prejudices that one ethnic group is superior or inferior to another, often leading to discrimination.

Distinguish prejudice, an attitude, from discrimination, unequal treatment. Institutional racism concerns organisational practices, not just openly racist individuals.

Unequal outcomes can indicate possible discrimination, but do not by themselves prove its cause. Institutional racism does not require deliberate racist intent.

Resistance to teachers may develop partly in response to racism or negative stereotyping. Cultural explanations are therefore limited if they blame pupils’ communities while overlooking how schools treat them.
