Revise: Data on CrimeSociologists use three main sources: police-recorded crime, victim surveys and self-report studies. Each reveals something different. Police records show offences known to and recorded by the police; victim surveys ask about experiences of crime; self-report studies ask people about their own offending.

Do not subtract police-recorded crime from survey estimates to calculate the dark figure: the two sources cover different offences and populations.
Distinguish crime committed from crime recorded: an increase in police-recorded crime does not necessarily mean more offending.

Two important sources are police-recorded crime and the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). Police-recorded crime counts offences reported to and logged by the police. The CSEW asks people aged 16 and over living in households about their experiences of crime, including incidents they did not report.
Offences entered into police crime-recording systems and included in published crime counts.
