Education

Definition

A social institution that organises learning and passes on knowledge, skills, norms and values.

Education passes on knowledge and skills, but it also teaches ways of behaving and helps shape people's futures. A pupil may learn mathematics in a lesson while also learning to arrive on time, cooperate with classmates and respond to authority. Sociologists ask what these experiences do for individuals and for society — and whether everyone benefits equally.

Distinguish what a theory claims education does from whether schools actually achieve it. Equal assessment rules do not necessarily mean equal opportunities.

Primary and secondary describe stages of education; state and private describe how schools are funded. These are not four mutually exclusive categories.
