Where deception is used, explaining it afterwards through debriefing can help participants understand what happened. The British Sociological Association recommends seeking consent afterwards where prior informed consent was not obtained, ideally, and safeguarding participants’ anonymity. These steps matter, but they cannot undo an intrusion or guarantee that trust will be restored.
