They charge no school fees and have greater freedom over their curriculum. Before 2010, academies chiefly replaced failing schools with sponsored institutions under New Labour; after 2010, conversion expanded under coalition and Conservative governments.

The curriculum is the knowledge and skills taught in school. An ethnocentric curriculum centres one culture while overlooking or undervaluing others. Critics argue that parts of the school curriculum have prioritised white British and European experiences.
