Academy

Academies receive funding directly from government, are run by academy trusts and are outside local-authority control. They charge no school fees and have greater freedom over their curriculum. Before 2010, academies chiefly replaced failing schools with sponsored institutions under New Labour; after 2010, conversion expanded under coalition and Conservative governments.
