The argument that the criminal justice system treats women more leniently than men, particularly women who conform to gender stereotypes.
Revise: Crime and deviance key termsThe chivalry thesis proposes that predominantly male criminal justice personnel may treat women more leniently because stereotyped ideas present women as needing protection rather than punishment. This treatment may particularly favour women who conform to gender expectations. If women’s offences are less likely to lead to formal action, official records may make the difference between women’s and men’s offending appear greater than it really is.
