The Ramayana presents Rama and Sita as an ideal married couple. Their married relationship, rather than cohabitation, provides a model for Hindus who believe that a committed relationship should be established through marriage. Their example also gives commitment a practical meaning: sharing hardship and caring for a partner when life becomes difficult.
