GCSE Religious Studies · key term
Islam’s central sacred text, believed by Muslims to be Allah’s revelation to Muhammad.
Used by AQA and Eduqas
Paper 1
The final holy book of Islam, believed by Muslims to be Allah's words revealed in Arabic to Muhammad through the angel Jibril.
Revise: Holy BooksBoth Sunni and Shi'a Muslims recognise the Qur'an as their central sacred text and believe that Allah revealed scriptures before it. However, recognising the divine origin of an earlier book does not mean giving every surviving version the same authority as the Qur'an.
Paper 1, Paper 3
Distinguish revelation from authorship: Muslims believe Muhammad received and recited the Qur'an, rather than composing it.
When explaining authority, connect a belief to its consequence: because Muslims believe the Qur'an is Allah's word, they trust its guidance about how to live.
Do not say that Muslims reject all earlier scriptures. They recognise their divine origins, while regarding the Qur'an as the final authority.
